New Oakville Recycling Rules 2026: What Goes in Your Blue Box Now?

If you put your blue bins out this morning in Oakville, you might have noticed things look a little different. As of January 1, 2026, the responsibility for our recycling has shifted from Halton Region to a non-profit called Circular Materials.

While your collection day hasn't changed, the list of what you can toss in that blue bin has expanded significantly. Here is the "Cheat Sheet" for Oakville’s new recycling reality.

The Big Change: Producer Responsibility

For the first time, the companies that make the packaging are now responsible for recycling it. This means more items are being accepted because the system is now standardized across Ontario.

What’s NEW in your Blue Box?

Starting this week, you can finally recycle items that used to be destined for the landfill:

• Coffee Cups: Yes, those single-use takeout coffee cups (paper-based with plastic lining) are now accepted. Just make sure they are empty!

• Flexible Plastics: This includes bread bags, produce bags, and even the overwrap from your toilet paper and paper towels.

• Tubes & Tubs: You can now recycle empty toothpaste tubes, deodorant sticks, and ice cream tubs.

• Black Plastics: Previously a "no-go" for most scanners, black plastic food trays and containers are now officially on the "Yes" list.

• Foam Packaging: Styrofoam egg cartons and clean takeout containers are now accepted in the blue bin.

What Stays the Same?

• Your Schedule: Your collection day remains exactly as it was.

• The Containers: You can continue to use your existing blue boxes or clear bags.

• Other Waste: Halton Region still manages your Garbage, Green Cart (Compost), and Yard Waste. If you have a missed garbage pickup, you still call 311. If you have a missed recycling pickup, you now contact the new contractor, Miller Waste Systems.

Quick Tips for Oakville Residents:

1. Empty and Rinse: The new system relies on high-quality materials. A half-full jar of peanut butter can ruin a whole batch of recycling.

2. Lids On or Off? For plastic bottles and cartons, keep the lids on. For glass jars, take the lids off and put them in the bin separately.

3. Shredded Paper: Don't put it loose in the bin! Place it in a tied, clear plastic bag so it doesn't blow across your neighbors' lawns in Bronte or Glen Abbey.
